Paul Rice

Photographer

Paul Rice, a photographer and trained pianist, has been crafting evocative images since 1991. Born in New York, he spent a decade immersed in the creative energy of San Francisco and another fifteen years amid the artistic community of Santa Fe. He now resides in Los Angeles. Deeply influenced by Ansel Adams and the rich tradition of Southwestern black-and-white photography, Rice is known for capturing the austere beauty of deserts, Death Valley, and the landscapes of Northern California.

For nearly two decades, he worked exclusively with analog large-format photography, mastering the intricate processes of film and darkroom development. Since 2010, he has embraced digital photography, utilizing a unique method of scanning negatives and refining them in Photoshop to achieve his distinct aesthetic. Combining technical precision with a profound appreciation for nature, Rice creates images that resonate with his fascination for light, physics, and the miraculous complexities of existence.

Artist Statement

“Photography is my way of exploring the miraculous—those fleeting moments when light, form, and energy align to reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary. Inspired by themes of evolution, nature, and the intricate patterns that define our universe, my work draws heavily on concepts like the Fibonacci sequence, fractals, and wave-particle duality. These ideas not only shape my worldview but also guide my creative process.

When I press the shutter, I aim to capture more than just a scene; I strive to distill a sense of wonder and connection. Whether observing the interplay of shadows across a desert expanse or the rhythmic geometry of tree branches, my images reflect a deep curiosity about the fundamental nature of reality.

For me, photography is a meditation—a search for meaning in the interplay of light and form. It’s a way to tell stories, to pause and marvel at the probabilities that brought us here, and to capture the miraculous beauty that surrounds us every day.”
